Under the state mandate, the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act, community water systems, like Wilmette, are required to develop an inventory to identify the number of suspected lead service lines. If lead service lines are identified, community water systems create and implement a comprehensive plan to replace those service lines within a required timeframe. In accordance with the law, the Village of Wilmette submitted a draft lead service line replacement plan in 2024 and will submit a final plan by 2027.

The first requirement of the Act is to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive Water Service Line Material Inventory identifying and documenting the materials that currently make up all of the water service lines within Wilmette. The Village is in compliance with this requirement through the submission of annual inventories.

While the Village has identified the material of the vast majority of water service lines in Wilmette, there are still less than 400 remaining service lines whose material is unknown. Help us identify these unknowns by completing the Village’s Water Service Line Survey.

Wilmette is currently developing a comprehensive plan to replace all lead water service lines in accordance with the second requirement of the Act. In accordance with the law, the Village of Wilmette will submit a draft lead service line replacement plan to IEPA in 2024, and a final plan in 2027. The Village’s Municipal Services Committee is in the process of evaluating the draft plan.

Also, in accordance with the Act, if the Village has identified that your property has a lead water service line, you will be contacted via mail annually with information regarding ways to reduce exposure and available resources.

The Municipal Services Committee (MSC) considers all matters relating to streets and public ways, refuse disposal, water, sewers, and other utilities. Memos from past MSC meetings regarding lead service lines are below.
